Midland County Sheriff patch
MIDLAND, MI — Police have released the name of a pilot killed in a recent plane crash in Midland County.
Slade David Martin, 23, died in a plane crash that occurred about 1:22 p.m. on Monday, May 17. The crash involved a single-engine Cessna 182H model, which Martin was the pilot and sole occupant of.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash site in the area of South Geneva and West Ball Roads in Jasper Township. St. Louis firefighters also responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze, finding Martin in the craft’s cockpit.
Sheriff Myron Greene said the investigation so far has indicated the plane may have come in contact with a radio antenna tower or its supportive wires. Two debris fields have been located, one near the tower and the other in a field a short distance away where the fuselage came to rest, Greene said.
The ongoing investigation is currently in the hands of the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
Martin hailed from Elwell in Gratiot County. He graduated from Alma High School in 2015 as a class valedictorian, then earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Ferris State University, according to his obituary.
“Slade had an unwavering drive to reach and shatter any goal he set for himself,” his obituary states. “He was always striving to do more and be a better person in every way possible. Slade had a passion for flying and this past Saturday achieved his Commercial Multi Engine Pilot Rating, being one step closer to his next goal of becoming an Airline Pilot. Slade worked with 3 Point Aviation in Alma and helped others with their goal of flying as a Certified Flying Instructor. He also worked for Gateway Air Service, patrolling pipelines throughout the State of Michigan.”
Martin is survived by his parents, two brothers, his girlfriend, and numerous extended relatives. “Slade will be dearly missed by all who knew him and be remembered for his drive, determination, being able to stretch every dollar, his great love of the outdoors, trying new things and most importantly his family,” his obituary states.
